How to root your HTC Hero(GSM with original 1.5 cupcake) and flash a customized Rom

Hi guys,

Recently I had been very unhappy with my Hero phone being stuck on Android 1.5 version with HTC not giving any signs of upgrading for its users. I am keen to customize my Hero phone with an upgraded ROM, which provides so many additional functions as well as an updated Marketplace.

So thought I would just compile a step by step guide after searching all over the net for the proper steps on how to first root your HTC Hero phone, note: GSM version and from the original HTC Android version of 1.5 to a customized ROM of 2.1.

Various resources from the net yields different methods, but I am showing the steps that actually works as of 1 month ago, e.g. May 2010. As long as you follow them closely.

First and most importantly, you have to root your phone, in order to gain admin privileges, or so called "root" user rights to make changes to the phone.

Next, with your rooted phone, just install a custom "Recovery Rom". The current one that works for me is AMON RA-Hero 1.6. What this Recovery Rom does is it gives you the utility options to select a Flash Rom to install, usually in .zip format. It also provides functions with Nandroid backup of all your existing data first, and allows you to partition your SD card so that a separate storage space is allocated for future functions such as running Applications from SD card(Apps2SD)

Go to the Hero's blog for installation instructions. AMON RA Recovery Image
Recovery image 1.6.2 is available for download on this link above as well as the adb command lines.

Note: the adb command line has to be done on your windows DOS box. e.g. run cmd->

For the adb tools and the android SDK, you need to first download and install from Android's development site.

In summary,
1) Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img to the root of your sdcard
2) Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
3) adb shell $su (not required if you have root already)
4) Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)

Once you are able to follow the steps above to install and boot into RA Hero's 1.6.2 image on your phone, you will get this screen.

With the custom recovery Rom in place, you can now flash customized Roms from the fabulous developers on any of the sites giving you GSM Hero Roms, but my personal favorite is from Hero Blog's SenseHero.

Expansion III Cataclysm!!

Things are getting really hot in World of Warcraft lately.. before I have fully played through the content of Patch 3.2 comes another big news. Deathwing has returned...together with Onyxia, Patch 3.2.2 as well for an anniversary special..

Details of release date is not confirmed yet, but with 2 new races, Worgen and Goblins to play as, remodeled classic dungeons, new raids and best of all, flying mounts in Azeroth!, this is gonna be as hot as the spewing lava and molten..

With the chilling winds of northrend still blowing on our faces, soon we will be heading back to Kalimdor and Azeroth with alliances broken, renewed hatred between Hordes and the Alliance. Hmmm I reckon Naxxramas will soon be like Karazhan, a raid well forgotten.. Hell, I haven't even done much in Ulduar yet.. But nevertheless, this is the thing to really look out for.. gosh this is hot.. Check out the trailers and stuff at Wow official site: Cataclysm

Latest update! Skoll tamed!!

This has been such a flurry of good luck lately, my nightly rounds of flying of Storm Peaks for the elusive Spirit Wolf is finally over :)

Skoll is tamed at 3.35am server time on Nagrand realm.

Just heading out of the valley after turning from Temple of Storms, smack in the middle of some snow crusted trees, is the elusive and beautiful beast...

Saw Skoll thanks for his bluish hue while flying above, I swooped down to look closer and Voila! My npc_scan did not work, so it was really lucky my eyes were still open at that hour..Quickly I dropped my existing wolf pet, set up a freeze trap and started to tame him.. I'm surprised my freeze trap lasted the whole duration of the taming process, and he did not even touch me or scratch me.. well I guess I must have put some glyphs to increase my trap duration..So after a few good seconds, Skoll is tamed :)

Now I am a very happy hunter, for the thrill of the hunt!

Patch 3.2 I'm a Crusader now!

This is my first attempt at blogging again, after months of procrastination and disbelief I have anything to write at all. It might be abrupt to start talking about Patch 3.2 of this game after months of playing in WOTLK already, but I guess there is always a starting point.

Well, I have just chalked up 100 Champion's Seals in the new patch 3.2, and hamming it up with a nice Argent Warhorse, and since it is maintenance day in Nagrand Server, I might as well write my happiness out here. Of course, I had worked my ass off to become labeled a Crusader, since you have to complete this Crusader to be able to get the title and be eligible for the mount

And I can't believe I have the luck to find this drop yesterday night with a 5 man team in Trial of the Champion, the polearm I had been working hard for-Marrowstrike

Now, if I can just top it off with finding one of the rare pets in Northrend, my hope's on getting Skoll, then I will be the happiest hunter.
